Headline (1st Annual Binational Coalition Event)
The Hidalgo
County/Reynosa Binational Prevention committee is a binational
workgroup that will address binational issues that impact the
quality of life in the region, and will look for community based
solutions to improve the quality of life, public health and
safety. The coalition was newly formed as of May 2005 after an
invitation was made by the Director of the Center for Juvenile
Rehabilitation, Ms. Alejandra Trevino, to engage in a joint
effort to raise the level of awareness regarding substance abuse
in all border cities. Meetings were subsequently held involving
representatives from The Rio Grande Valley Council, Inc.,
Western CAPT, Centro de Atencion a la Juventud De Reynosa,
Jurisidiccion Sanitaria Cuatro, MADD, and the University of
Texas Pan-American, during which time an event was planned to
inaugurate this great binational effort between both the United
States and Mexico. On June 26, 2005 the binational committee
remembered the International Day of the Fight Against the Use
and Trafficking of Illegal Drugs at the Hidalgo-Reynosa
International Bridge. During this event, both Mayors from
Hidalgo and Reynosa met halfway across the bridge and proceeded
to the United States side and issued a proclamation in both
languages that recognized the reason for the celebration.
Balloons were also released that represented the flags from both
the United States and Mexico and a mariachi was also present to
provide entertainment.
